Who we are:
The NHMRC-funded Centre of Research Excellence in Food Retail Environments for Health – known as RE-FRESH – is a global leader in the advancement of healthy food retail research and practice.
The centre was established in 2019 as a joint venture of Deakin University, Monash University, The George Institute for Global Health, The University of Queensland, Obesity Policy Coalition, The University of Auckland, YMCA, and Dalhousie University (Canada).
RE-FRESH aims to transform the retail food environments in which people buy their food and beverages to improve diet and health at a population level.
The centre’s international research team are experts in their fields, including epidemiology, health economics, food environments, nutrition and dietetics, public health, advocacy, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, obesity and health policy analysis, artificial intelligence, food retail, biostatistics, health equity and consumer behaviours.
RE-FRESH is focused on high quality cross-disciplinary research and collaboration to build the evidence, methods and tools needed to accelerate the uptake of proven healthy food retail initiatives in remote, regional and urban settings in Australia, and internationally. To achieve this we are building the business case for healthy retail through our partnerships with government and non-government organisations, community organisations and food retailers.
The Nourish Network is a multi-sector collective working to increase demand, availability and access to healthy and sustainable retail food.
Nourish Network’s mission is to coordinate and harness cross-sector connections between retailers, researchers, policy makers and practitioners, to collectively transform food retail.
Formed in Victoria in 2018 as an initiative of Deakin University’s Institute for Health Transformation, Nourish Network brings together a dedicated coalition of food citizens from academic institutions, public agencies, food business operators, non-profit organisations & communities, to work collaboratively to identify the evidence, resources, & policy settings required for transformation of food retail environments.
Nourish Network is organised according to a collective impact model, with a small backbone team funded by Deakin University, an advisory committee with representation from across various sectors, & action teams that self-form around areas identified by the network.
Nourish Network has expanded since its inception, with members representing a wide variety of sectors. Action-team work has led to eight new collaborative projects, which in turn have led to new research publications, new research funding & development of resources tailored by & for the food retail sector. Nourish has also driven impact through increasing awareness of the need for focussed research & partnerships to progress healthy and sustainable food retail.
