The food environment is a key determinant of population diets. Over the past four decades, Pacific people have experienced a shift from traditional balanced diets to unhealthy ones characterized by the consumption of ultra-processed foods sold in modern retail environments (e.g., supermarkets and convenience stores). PhD Candidate, Sela Fusi has conducted research to assess the healthiness of retail food environments in Tonga. This research summary provides a brief overview of her findings and highlights the need for targeted policies and interventions to create healthier retail food environments in Tonga.
